Do Your Kids Know Their Veggies? Join the Food Revolution!
By Dr. Michelle Robin
I love TED. And if you’ve never heard of it, I am proud to be the one to introduce you. TED started as a small nonprofit devoted to a simple concept: Ideas Worth Sharing. TED’s first undertaking was a conference in 1984 that brought together people from the worlds of Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED has grown to be a huge organization and is very much still focused on ideas worth sharing and, in my opinion, also focused on making the world a better place.
I recently stumbled across the TED presentation by Chef Jamie Oliver about today’s children and how we, as a society, are doing them such an injustice by allowing them to subsist on junk food and the like. I spent 21 minutes watching Oliver’s TED presentation and was not only captivated by his words and his message, I was even more determined to devote my time and energies to doing something about it.
Then, I dug a little further and discovered this trailer promoting Oliver’s new ABC series, The Food Revolution.
It was amazing to me that today’s children often don’t know the difference between tomatoes and potatoes – how is it that that is possible? Has society really changed so much that we are living in a time where we don’t have either the time, the resources or the ability to teach out kids about vegetables, fruit and healthy eating?
I hope you’ll not only watch this trailer, but also tune into Oliver’s Food Revolution series, which premieres Friday, March 26th, at 8pm CST on ABC. I know that I want to learn more about what this talented and passionate young chef is doing. In addition, I hope to be able to put my skills to work in a similar fashion to help our friends, family and patients make a move toward not only more healthful eating habits but more fulfilled, longer lives as well.
