Stick To Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2012
How many times have you been extremely excited to start the New Year off right, only to lose momentum very quickly? We often plan to make huge changes in our lives, and while the first few days and maybe even weeks of the New Year are great, a lot of us eventually fall back into our old habits and patterns. The disappointment in ourselves only fuels the fire for more poor decisions. Many of us find this annual struggle a defeating feeling that may even lead to low self esteem or depression. No matter the degree of change you are looking for this year, it can be done! Simply put: take baby steps. There are many ways to prepare you for the New Year that will allow for success in whatever goals you may have. Here are four examples to keep in mind this year.
1. Be Realistic: Having over-the-top goals and aspirations are great, just make sure you slowly work your way up. A person cannot expect to finish a marathon if they have never even run a 5k. Set small, incremental goals along the way that will lead up to your final goal. Each mini goal you achieve will add to the motivation and push forward towards the bigger picture.
2. Schedule It And Write It Down: Make sure that you have planned the time to work on your goals. Write down your goals as well as your progress, or lack thereof, to hold yourself accountable. you can literally see your progress; and learn what works and doesn’t work for you.
3. Reward Yourself: Even if you have not yet achieved your final goal, it is okay to reward yourself for having a great week or month. Make sure to recognize that you are heading in the right direction. Self validation is very important when it comes to increasing your motivation. You are worth it!
4. Don’t Beat Yourself Up: We are not perfect. We all get off of the path. We all make mistakes, fall to the pressures and old habits; but don’t give up! Recognize that you took a step back, shake it off, and continue on your journey. Try not to have an “all or nothing” mentality. You can do this!
By setting reasonable goals, tracking your progress, rewarding yourself and not letting the setbacks get you down, you will have what it takes to go above and beyond your goals for 2012. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to – you just need the proper tools to help you get there. Hold yourself accountable, and know when you are getting off track. Realizing that motivation and hard work can do wonders for you is the key to keep movin’ on!
Happy New Year!
