Chiropractic – our foundation
Chiropractic is the foundation of care at Your Wellness Connection because it emphasizes the inherent power of the body to heal itself. The holistic discipline of chiropractic is an art, science, and philosophy concerned with the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, the master control system of the body.
The role of a wellness chiropractor is to support innate intelligence and remove interferences in the spine and other joints in the body, allowing the body to self regulate and self heal. Our goal of wellness intervention is always to restore homeostasis, or balance to the body, not to relive symptoms or treat disease. When interferences to the nervous system are removed, homeostasis occurs. Human beings are innately designed to be in balance.
“The only way to restore health, based on the scientific laws of physiology, is to provide what the body’s cells require for proper function and to remove interferences to proper cell function. These irrefutable scientific facts are what D.D. Palmer based the paradigm of chiropractic upon…” Dr. James Chestnut B.Ed., M.Sc., D.C., C.C.W.P.
What is
Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a natural approach to healing using non-invasive, non-surgical methods to treat the whole person. One major focus within the chiropractic profession is on what is called a subluxation or spinal misalignment. When subluxation occurs it causes dysfunction in the joints involved, the tissues that surround them as well as the nerves as they exit the spine. When there is irritation or interference to the nerves, the organs and tissues they supply can’t function optimally. Chronic misalignment leads to degeneration of the spine, which can often lead to pain or disease in the body.
Symptoms and Applications
Symptoms of a stressed spine and nervous system are many, but may include headaches, fatigue, back pain, decreased range of motion, muscle tension, numbness and tingling in arms and legs, or any feeling of dis-ease in the body. Subluxation can be present without noticeable symptoms. The worst symptom is no symptom at all!
Applications where chiropractic care can benefit include health restoration, sports injuries or other physical traumas, childhood injuries, pre & post natal care, pediatric and geriatric care, and wellness maintenance. To learn more about chiropractic visit our online library.
Our Doctors – Experts in Wellness
Our team of doctors, with 70 years of combined experience in the latest techniques and breakthroughs in chiropractic, are experts in the field of wellness. Our doctors have advanced training within the chiropractic profession in orthopedics, pediatrics, neurology, and internal medicine, designating us as one of the most highly trained collective team of doctors in the country. They hold reputations of providing exceptional treatment in a warm, nurturing environment. Our doctors work with clients, as their personal case manager, to integrate care within the Center utilizing a whole body approach to healing.
Personal Assessment
As part of a comprehensive wellness assessment, clients receive initial and routine follow-up object and subjective evaluations including a nervous system scan, BIA, orthopedic tests, metabolic assessment and x-rays.
BIA (Bio Impendence Analysis) is a method of assessing your “body composition” (the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass). The BIA also measures cell health, from cell membrane health to longevity of the cells, hydration levels and much more. This gives your practitioner a great in-expensive accurate way to monitor your progress with certain lifestyle changes.
Nervous System Scan, or spinal scan, measures muscle tension around the spine using surface EMG. Measuring muscle tension indirectly tells us how well the nerves coming from the spine are communicating with the body. This is an important screening because the nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. The scan is performed using electrodes on the surface of the neck. The scan is only a measurement of electrical current output, no sensation will be felt and nothing will be absorbed in the skin.
Treatment Techniques
Spinal Manipulation or Adjustment uses precise impulses in specific direction to restore normal motion and position of individual vertebrae. This is the primary method of treatment administered to maintain a healthy balance between the spine and nervous system, relieving many types of pains. This is the technique when a “pop” is usually heard.
The Activator Method is a low-force adjusting protocol that uses a small, specially-designed instrument to deliver a light and measured force to gently correct misalignments of the spine and extremity joints.
Applied Kinesiology (AK) is the relationship between muscles and the function of corresponding organs. AK is a system that evaluates structural, chemical and psychological aspects of health using manual muscle testing with other standard methods of diagnosis. Because AK is an aid to diagnosis, muscle testing is used to assess imbalance to help determine dysfunction.
Cox Flexion-Distraction is a popular chiropractic technique which uses a gentle, non-force stretching movement to aid in relieving nerve pressure in the lower and middle back and neck.
The Diversified technique is commonly used to restore normal biomechanical function, and correction of subluxation. In addition, Diversified methods have been developed to adjust extremity joints, allowing for beneficial applications in treating sports and other injuries. Each Diversified adjustment uses a specific line of drive for all manual thrusts, allowing for specificity in correcting mechanical distortions of the spine.
The Pro-Adjuster is the application of low force to the spine using state-of-the-art technical instrument used for spinal analysis and adjustment that accurately measures subluxation of vertebrae. The Pro-Adjuster utilizes a precise oscillating vibration to lightly realign the misaligned segment of the spine. The amount of pressure can be precisely controlled and adjusted for the client’s comfort. The Pro-Adjuster will register when the misalignment is corrected and automatically stops the treatment. This technique is often used when clients prefer low-force and no sound during their adjustments.
SOT (Sacral Occipital Technique) is neurologically based, requiring advanced knowledge of how the body responds to correction and in what order it prefers to address stress. It is a method of chiropractic evaluation and care that identifies distortion patterns in the nervous, pelvic and spinal systems. The relationship between the spinal, cranial and related organ systems is analyzed and efficient cerebrospinal fluid flow is emphasized in this technique.
Thompson Drop technique uses an adjusting table with a pneumatically driven segmented drop system, which quickly lowers the section of the client’s body corresponding with the spinal region being adjusted. Thrusts are delivered at high speeds using minimal force because while the thrust initiates the movement, it is the speed of the drop that carries the joint through the remainder of its range of motion allowing for the adjustment.
Methods of Care
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) works with the natural and unique rhythms in the craniosacral system – the bones of the cranium (skull) and the pelvis and the physical environment in which the brain and spinal cord develop and function. CST uses light pressure on the cranial bones to locate and release any restrictions preventing the bones from pumping oxygen and nutrient rich fluid to the brain and spinal cord. This hands-on method evaluates the function of the central nervous system and corrects underlying sources of imbalance or dysfunction. By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical concerns including, but not limited to colic, ear infections, learning disabilities, motor-coordination impairments, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, emotional difficulties, and stress and tension-related problems.
