Iyengar Yoga
“When I practice, I am a philosopher.
When I teach, I am a scientist.
When I demonstrate, I am an artist.”
B.K.S. Iyengar
Yoga is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well being.
Iyengar yoga, created by B.K.S. Iyengar, is known for its use of “props”, such as belts and blocks, as aids. It’s fundamentals of postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama) are structured and categorized to allow students to progress safely from the basic to the more advanced. This is done by emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana).
Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar pioneered the use of “props” such as cushions, benches, blankets, ropes, and even sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully “supported” methods requiring less muscular effort.

Mat Pilates
“Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty not only to attain it but to maintain it.”
Joseph Pilates
Pilates is a method of exercise and movement designed to simultaneously stretch, strengthen, and lengthen the entire body without adding bulk. Pilates brings balance to our body, and teaches us that we are in charge of how we move, sit, stand, and walk. The body’s own weight is used as resistance in this total body conditioning system. Mat classes include a series of controlled postures to promote increased oxygen intake, tone thighs, shoulders, arms and midsection, improve posture and strengthen core stability. Pilates compliments chiropractic care in that it strengthens spinal stabilizer muscles to result in longer held adjustments.
Your Wellness Connection is not currently offering a Pilates class, but this service will be offered again in the future.
